Dear Susan,
Thanks for your nice email and request for information. Although your email is addressed to Michael, you have asked if William, John or I have any information to help you in your quest to find information about your mother and Mae Kelly. You mention a folder that John and I share. I have no idea what folder that John and I share. I don’t even know if the reference is to a folder that contains material about John and me, or if the reference is to a folder that John and I supposedly have in our possession?
Although I am certainly not able to respond in any detail, I think a partial explanation as to why the materials would not contain as much about your mother as Bill, Mike, John and myself is because our mother enjoyed collecting and saving stuff about her children and husband. I doubt that our mother made an effort to preserve information about Mae Kelly. I know that she saved news clippings about your mother and father, and I can recall seeing pictures of your mother as a young girl. I have no idea how many of those things might be in the collection, but think that it would be worth your while to spend some time – perhaps after the first of the year, to go through the things that are up there to see for yourself just what there is. I know that there was a flood in the basement – some time in the 60’s I believe, that destroyed a number of scrapbooks, etc. One of the things that was destroyed was a scrapbook of clippings, photos, etc. that I kept when I was in high school. It could be that some of the things that are missing were damaged in that flood.
I can’t respond to any of your specific questions, but I am aware that Michael has done his best to preserve practically everything that was in the house where we grew up that was of a historical nature, including photos, clippings, letters, etc. If it were not for Michael and William, there is a good chance that much of the documentation that has been preserved would have been discarded.
I am not in favor of leaving anything with the UNM library that they do not want, and believe that anything that they want to return, we should accept. I respect and support your interest in wanting to learn more about your mom in her younger years, as well as your grandmother. I do believe that you need to review the material for yourself.
Love,
Thomas
